CADENZA

Cadenza was the first concert presented by a2. orchestra, establishing an idea that would become central to the organisation: creating opportunities for young musicians to experience solo repertoire with orchestral accompaniment. The program brought together solo works for bassoon, oboe, cello, trombone, double bass and flute, reimagined with a chamber orchestra rather than piano accompaniment.

The program moved across a wide range of repertoire, from Pierné and Hummel to Mendelssohn, Leoncavallo, Koussevitzky and Mouquet, giving each soloist the opportunity to step into the role of concerto soloist. The concert also featured the world premiere of Josh Spirek’s Introduction and Cadenza for chamber orchestra, giving the program a new work alongside its rediscovered and reimagined repertoire.

Featuring six soloists and an 11-piece chamber orchestra, Cadenza established a2. orchestra’s interest in creating opportunities that sit outside the traditional concert format, bringing musicians together around repertoire that might otherwise never be heard with an ensemble.
